The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

Sept. 4

Had a party last night. Result. Everyone was on the woozy side. I went to bed at 2:30 & had to get up at 4 to go on a raid. We went back to Rouen. Turned out to be an awful easy one. Didn’t see any flak or fighters. Maybe it was a good thing.
