The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.









Aug. 31, 1942

The rumors are that we are moving to Libya. Could be cause everyone seems to think that we’re leaving England soon. I hope we do because I wanna see as much of the world as I can.

Funny think, I was scared stiff before my first raid and now I wanna go. Hope we get a plane and can go on the next one. This is the life. We do nothing but sit on our cans. A raid just helps break the monotony.
