July 5, 1943

Above is for 4th July. Today we went over target & really plastered it. We didn’t have any trouble but the 99th who was about 10 min. in front of us was jumped by 100 fighters. They lost 3 Forts, claimed 62 fighters destroyed & got credit for 45 destroyed. One plane got 14 & one gunner got 7 of them.

I could see things burning all around the field for a radius of 30 miles or more. They must have been planes burning.
