The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

Nov. 28, 1942.

Some of our boys went on their first North African mission today. All of our squadron but 3 went. We didn’t get to go because we didn’t have a full load of ammunition. Guess we will get on one tomorrow.

The 301st group lost 2 planes but the 97th didn’t lose any. They went to the airfield and harbor at Bizerta. The boys said they really tore heck out of the target. They shot down quite a few German fighters. Some of them were FW 190s. That meas that Hitler is taking things down here quite seriously. There were only using them in France before this campaign began.
