The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

Sept. 5, 1942

What a day. Went to Rouen this morning. Everyone felt plenty tough. 36 Fortresses went. We really plastered the target. It was the most beautiful day I’ve seen over here. France is such a pretty place. Could see practically the whole south coast of England. It was so pretty. It just doesn’t seem real that there is a war going on. Maybe someday it will be over. Then. . .
