The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

July 26, 1942

I had another mission today. We flew aver the central part of England. This is a pretty country. Much prettier from the air than our America. One doesn’t realize how small this island is until he flies over it.
