The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

July 30

We flew again this morning. Passed over both Cambridge & Oxford. They look nice from the air. Not quite as nice as ours but they are much older.

We started to fly again this afternoon, but the window came out of the radio compartment and knocked a hole in the tail so we came back.
