The words that follow are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

Went into town today. This is quite a modern town. The people here are quite stylish. Looked the place over, saw quite a few things, but only bought a pocketbook. Met a little Jew girl who could speak a few words of English. She invited me up to her house to talk with her mother. They used to live in Gibraltar & the mother could speak English. I only stayed a few minutes but I enjoyed the chat.
