The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

July 28, 1942

We flew again today. They are really giving us the works. We went all over Northeast & Central England. It’s very pretty country. Seems too peaceful for a war to be going on.
