Tuesday June 30, 1942

 

The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

 

 

June 30, 1942 Tuesday

Got up this morning at 11:30. All of the planes returned, but one cracked up on landing.

These boys are scared of those raids on Germany. Can’t say that I blame them, cause they must be plenty tough going. These are the biggest planes I’ve ever seen. I thought our 17’s were big, but you could almost put them in the bomb bay of these.
