The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

Nov. 24, 1942

Had to sleep on the ground with Blaida last night. It was a miserable night for me. I almost froze to death and the ground was plenty hard.

We got our brakes fixed and went back to Gib. (Gibraltar) this afternoon. I had a steak supper and bought my girl a souvenir here on the rock. Wish I could see that one right now. Bet I would really love her to death.
