The words that follow (in italics) are transcribed verbatim from the journal my father, Lt. Ben H. Rushing, kept during his deployment as a navigator on a B17.

July 29

We had another air raid alarm last nite. Seems to be getting quite a thing now. I’ve slept through most of them but I bet I hop when the bombs start going off.

We flew this afternoon.
